Police called to council meeting

30 Jan, 2008 02:28 PM
CASEY Mayor Janet Halsall is considering mediation for resolving conflict between councillors following a stormy council meeting last Tuesday.

In an unprecedented move, Cr Halsall called police when fellow councillor Rob Wilson refused to heed her order to leave the chambers.

The incident started when Cr Wilson was asked to cease discussing the delays to pavilion works at the Narre Warren North Recreation Reserve.

He accused Cr Halsall of denying his right to "freedom of expression".

Cr Halsall said she asked Casey chief executive officer Mike Tyler to call the police when Cr Wilson did not calm down.

"It is unfortunate that due to continued disruptive and abusive behaviour, I was forced to request Cr Wilson to leave the council chamber for 30minutes," she said.

Cr Halsall said action was needed to resolve the discord among councillors, and was considering options, including mediation.

Cr Wilson defended his behaviour on the night, saying he was "standing up for [his] rights" and accused Cr Halsall of "abusing her power".

Municipal Association of Victoria president Dick Gross said he had never heard of police being called to a council meeting in Victoria.

"Clearly we need to have a talk to [Casey] Council."
