CARDINIA Shire residents can sit back and listen to some music around the lake in Emerald every Sunday this month.
The council is holding a series of free concerts in Emerald Lake Park that began at the weekend with the Victoria Police Showband.
Sunday's gig was one of the showband's 500 annual performances. The full-time professional big band racks up 50,000 kilometres travelling between engagements each year.
This Sunday's music will be provided by the Cardinia Civic Concert Band.
The 20-piece group performs about 12 times a year , and vice-president John McLean said the band's members range from a 10-year-old clarinetist to a tuba player in his early 80s.
"The band re-formed after World War II as a brass band and became a concert band in the 1980s, which gives us a much broader range of music to play."
The band's repertoire now includes swing classics, show tunes and scores from films.
On February 19, the talented young performers of Ba Boys will showcase Indian and Fijian music and dance. Maori cultural entertainment ensemble Te Hononga will perform on February 26.
The summer music series concerts are held at the bandstand (between the cafe and wading pool) of the park in Emerald Lake Road on Sundays from 12.30 to 3pm.
In the event of a declared code red day, extreme fire weather alert or other extreme weather conditions, Emerald Lake Park will be closed and the concerts will be cancelled.
