RESULTS of a council survey on an introduction of electronic gaming machine venues in Cardinia shows residents are strongly opposed to developments in their neighbourhood.
The survey of 430 Beaconsfield, Officer and Pakenham residents conducted on behalf of the council last month showed an overwhelming majority were opposed to EGMs in their suburb.
Central Ward councillor Brett Owen said the survey was "the best way [for council] to cop the least criticism".
"The people of Officer, Beaconsfield and Pakenham have clearly said they want facilities in the area, but won't support them if they have pokies."
Results show high support for health and fitness centres, restaurants and bistros, but not if the facilities include EGMs.
Cr Owen said it was fair to say most proposals were "off the radar" after DSL Investments, Pakenham Racing Club and Lakeside Hotel withdrew their applications.
"Half the respondents, 48 per cent, said there were already too many pokies in the area and 42 per cent think there is already enough." Most respondents believed operational hours at gaming venues should be limited to 12 hours.
Cr Bill Pearson said:
"The area is already saturated with machines and the numbers in Pakenham are already above the State Government requirements."
