Pep talk from coach

28 Sep, 2009 09:48 AM
FOOTBALL legend David Parkin hopes sharing his personal experiences with prostate cancer can further raise awareness of men's health issues.

The former AFL coach has been in recovery since March after successful prostate gland surgery.

His own health scare and loss of his father and grandfather to prostate cancer have prompted him to talk publicly and openly about men's health. He urges men to be more aware of their own risks and be prepared to talk openly about issues.

"Women are so much better at facing up to issues - much better than men.

"There's still that Australian male image of a macho man that doesn't need support or need to talk about these things, but that's not the case."

Guest speaker at the annual Casey Cardinia Men's Health Action Group forum next month, Parkin says he wouldn't be surprised to see plenty of women in attendance.

"I'm always amazed at the number of women who attend the forums with their partners.

"We now know that the incidence of prostate cancer is higher than breast cancer but women have been able to mobilise themselves in every way to ensure a greater awareness."

Parkin says that after media reports of his battle with prostate cancer, there was a cascading effect with a significant rise in the number of men getting prostate checks.

"If talking about my own experience assists in diagnosing and educating people about prostate cancer and other men's health issues, then I'm very happy to talk about it."

Rod Shearer, vice-chairman of the Casey Cardinia Men's Health Action Group, says this year's forum is aimed at the older members of the community.

"Retirement is not just a financial issue - it's also about keeping yourself healthy enough to enjoy your later years."

Mr Shearer said he hoped Parkin, and fellow guest speaker comedian Ben Price, would draw in crowds.

"This year we're hoping around 200 people will come to the free event."

Past forums have covered issues of stress and depression, with guest speakers including beyondblue's Jeff Kennett, former cricket great Merv Hughes and Rose Tattoo frontman Angry Anderson.

The Casey Cardinia Men's Health Action Group's forum, Planning for a Healthy Retirement, is at 6.30-9pm October 8 at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, Pakenham.

Entry is free. Details: Rod, 8768 5100.
