SHOPPERS who park illegally in disabled spaces or exceed restricted times will face tougher penalties.
Last week, Cardinia Shire councillors voted last week to introduce a designated-parking officer.
They, however, denied the introduction was a revenue-raising exercise. "With the number of people coming in to the area, the old ways do not apply any longer," Cr George Blenkhorn said.
Councillors were told that only about 10 parking infringement notices a week had been issued to shoppers across the shire in the past three months.
Parking will remain free but the council will introduce short- and long-term spaces.
Cr Collin Ross said the changes would provide a more workable shopping precinct, particularly in Pakenham.
"Car parking is still free as long as people abide by the signs."
He said he was fed up with the misuse of disabled parking spaces.
Cr Brett Owen called for an extensive education campaign and for parking leniency around railway stations.
The general manager of corporate services, Neil Thorpe, said the council needed to balance the needs of residents and commuters. "If there are time restrictions in streets, then those will be enforced."
