On the march to fight poverty

30 Mar, 2009 10:48 AM
MORE than 2800 people put their body and minds to the test last weekend as part of the Oxfam Trailwalker challenge.

Their mission was to run or walk 100kilometres from Jells Park in Wheelers Hill to Wesburn Park in the Yarra Valley in 48 hours.

Teams of four were expected to collectively raise more than $2.7million for Oxfam, an organisation helping to combat poverty.

The Journal spoke to Cathy Murphy, a walker in the Party Girls team, at the 22km mark at Lysterfield Lake last Friday.

She said the team was well ahead of their schedule to complete the walk in about 28 hours.

"It's a beautiful day out here and there are so many people here to support us. It's a wonderful atmosphere," Cathy said.
