New signs lower speed

29 Sep, 2008 02:16 PM
NEW electronic speed-restriction signs have been placed outside Timbarra Primary School in Berwick and Mary MacKillop Primary School in Narre Warren North.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the signs would improve motorists' awareness of reduced school speed limits during drop-off and pick-up times.

Since the State Government's introduction of speed limits of 40kmh in and around school zones, there has been a 24per cent reduction in crashes involving pedestrians or cyclists, Mr Donnellan said.

"Timbarra Primary is one of around 200 schools across Victoria to receive electronic speed signs through a $13.6million investment to improve safety in high-risk school zones.''

He said motorists needed to be vigilant around school zones and obey the speed limit, which was legally enforceable.

"Even a small reduction in travelling speed can dramatically increase the chances of a child surviving a collision.''

The electronic signs are being installed on school zones with a speed limit of 70kmh and school zones on 60kmh that have the highest traffic volumes.

Signs have already been installed at all schools on Victorian roads which are 80kmh or higher.
