Multiculturalism makeover needed for migrants 'to feel safe'

02 Nov, 2009 09:33 AM
TAMIL-BORN Kana Sivanantha used to feel safe walking the streets of Melbourne, but recent attacks on Indian students have changed his view.

"Three years ago my boys could walk to the station and the streets at 2.30am, but now after dark I pick them up. With Indians the target, they may not distinguish us from the Indians."

He said he had never been racially mistreated in Australia but believed that multiculturalism had come to a standstill and needed reviving for racial tolerance to be fostered.

"The recent events show that racism in Australia is increasing."
