AN Intersection in Berwick where a primary school student was struck by a car last month urgently needed its traffic light sequence changed, extra crossing supervisors and lower speed limits, La Trobe MP Jason Wood said last week.
Mr Wood added his support to Berwick Lodge Primary School and Cr Paul Richardson's push to see the changes at the intersection of Parkhill Drive, Mansfield Street and Princes Highway.
"After being approached by a concerned parent, I made contact with Berwick Lodge Primary School and was disappointed to discover that this intersection is a major safety concern,'' he said.
Mr Wood said after meeting with Berwick Lodge Primary School staff he believed the solution was "quite simple''.
"Casey Council needs to assist by providing an additional lollypop person to help children cross the highway and VicRoads needs to intervene by providing a red turning arrow and slowing the traffic down to 60kmh in the short section approaching the school.''
Councillors voted at last week's meeting to ask VicRoads for urgent funds for the turning arrows to be installed at the intersection and also the intersection of Hannah Drive and Heatherton Road in Endeavour Hills.
Council will also consider allocating extra money in the 2010/11 budget for more crossing supervisors at major intersections across the municipality.
