A FEASIBILITY study will determine if development of a regional motor sports facility in Cardinia Shire is a viable option.
Chairwoman of the Cardinia motor sports committee and Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato said a $20,000 budget contribution would be used for the study along with a further $13,500 from Cardinia Shire Council and $26,500 from go-kart manufacturer Drew Price Engineering Pty Ltd.
Ms Lobato said the study would ensure the project had community support and that the facility included the right mix of activities and programs to suit a range of uses.
"This feasibility study will now allow that proposal to be put to the community as well as all interested groups to determine the scope of the development and to ensure we get all the design elements right.
"The proposal already has the support of the Shire of Cardinia, Drew Price Engineering, Confederation of Australian Motor Sport Ltd, Motorcycling Australia, Chisholm Institute, the Pakenham police and Bass MP Ken Smith."
Ms Lobato said the proposed facility would be a place to provide driver education and training as well as employment, recreational and economic opportunities. She applauded the efforts of past mayor and councillor Bill Ronald, and the commitment of the current council, as a major stakeholder, to developing a suitable facility.
"I am very passionate about meeting the need for a motor recreation and education park, particularly for young people living in and around the shire."
