Mother distressed after near drowning at ARC

10 Dec, 2007 07:07 AM
A NARRE Warren mother is calling on parents to be more vigilant near the water after her three-year-old son nearly drowned at Casey ARC.

Marie Samawi and her two children were playing in the wave pool last Friday week when Andrew slipped and became trapped under water.

"I sat down with my 10-month-old and Andrew was running around me.

"Then he just disappeared.

"I saw him struggling to keep his head above the water, but he kept going under."

Mrs Samawi said other patrons at the pool helped her get her son out of the pool.

Mrs Samawi said her son was a little shaken, but was otherwise okay.

It was the second incident at the ARC in the past month.

On November 17, a three-year-old girl had to be revived by lifeguards and paramedics after being rescued from the bottom of the pool.

Mrs Samawi said she would definitely not be taking her children back to the pool.

YMCA group manager Michael Paterson confirmed the incidents, saying that in the most recent case, the toddler had entered the wave pool unsupervised and got out of his depth.

He said the pool was manned by lifeguards, as set out in the Royal Life Saving guidelines.

"This is a good time to highlight during Water Safety Week that children under 10 need to be actively supervised by parents."
