A PAKENHAM adult education centre is planning to double its vocational education and training classes following a recent $500,000 upgrade.
Living Learning Pakenham will officially launch its refurbished building during Adult Learning Week next week.
After its facelift, the centre can cater for 260 students at one time.
Centre manager Bronwyn Fleming hoped TAFE colleges and other training providers would make use of the new teaching spaces to offer courses to Cardinia Shire residents.
The upgrade had made the centre a far more welcoming place, she said.
"When we moved here in 2003, our funding was limited and we had a few problems in terms of sound, heating and ventilation," she said.
"We have established an attractive entrance suitable for people of all abilities, we have opened up more training spaces, and we have got flexible rooms."
The upgrade had already made an impact, she said. "The mood is a lot more positive and we have seen improvements in room rental; people are coming in to use the facilities."
The lack of a TAFE college in Cardinia meant a huge unmet need for educational facilities, she said.
"We are certainly meeting a need, but there is still room for improvement."
Pakenham resident Jill Bennett, who is studying business administration at the centre, said she liked it that class hours were tailored to suit her needs.
Her classmate Liana Coulthard, also of Pakenham, said courses at the centre were not too expensive and were held in a friendly environment.
"They have everything that I need, really," she said.
"I like the fact that it is intimate, too."
Ms Fleming said the centre offered training suitable for people who were out of work, women returning to work and young people struggling to get into courses or work.
"It's quite difficult to navigate the training system in Victoria, so come down and have a chat with us as a first point of contact."
