LIBERAL MP Jason Wood has retained the seat of La Trobe after a seesaw tussle with Labor hopeful Rodney Cocks.
On Tuesday, Mr Wood was 898 votes ahead in the two-party preferred count, with about 95 per cent of the vote counted. Mr Cocks conceded defeat at 2pm.
Pre-vote polling had predicted a loss for Mr Wood, as voters nationwide turned against the Coalition.
"I congratulate Rodney for [conceding]...[he] threw his heart and soul into the campaign," Mr Wood said.
Feedback from people in Mr Wood's electorate indicated they were not happy with the Coalition government, but were pleased with his performance.
"I greatly appreciate those who gave me their trust."
Mr Cocks congratulated Mr Wood on his win saying: "I wish him all the best."
He said it was "fantastic" to see the ALP win government.
Mr Wood said he would pressure the State and Federal governments to fund projects promised by the Liberal party.
"The worst thing about being in Opposition is that you can't do anything," Mr Wood said.
