Happy times at Berwick's big weekend

02 Mar, 2010 08:20 AM
IT WAS another great year at the annual Berwick Show with about 20,000 recorded visitors enjoying all the event had to offer last weekend.

Berwick Show committee president Warwick Glendenning said organisers were very pleased with attendance and with the behaviour of patrons.

"We had no incidents and everyone had a really good time.

"It was fantastic to again have the support from the Narre Warren police, who helped keep the event trouble-free and ensured there was a family-friendly atmosphere."

Mr Glendenning praised the efforts of hundreds of volunteers who helped make the show a success.

"From the committee's point of view - I am so pleased with all the work from the tireless volunteers. They are the ones who do all the hard work.

"We've also had fantastic support from the City of Casey and all our sponsors who have helped make this show, the 162nd, one of the best yet."

Traditional attractions such as sheep, cattle and goat judging or woodchopping were by no means overshadowed by the show's more modern aspects, which included performances from local singing and dancing groups, the beaut ute competition and the sideshow games and rides.

In the arts and crafts pavilion, the

best in a range of disciplines were on display, with everything from hand-sewn quilts and scrapbooking to pottery, Lego displays and art made from recycled materials.

The cookery competitions showed off the creativity of entrants with categories such as best-decorated cupcakes, edible necklace, homemade jam and Anzac biscuits.

Ladies from the Berwick Country Women's Association said there had been a wonderful turnout for this year's show and a strong level of entrants for the competitions.

Around the grounds, there were plenty of activities to suit the whole family. The largest crowds were seen for Samson the Monster Truck and the Empire FMX freestyle motorcross aerial shows on the main arena.

Casey district Scout groups tested the agility of show visitors young and old with their rope bridge and offered a host of free activities, which included crafts, badge making and woodwork.

Other show goers tested their hand-milking skills on Brandy the much-obliging cow, or their weaving ability with the ladies from the Waverley Spinners and Weavers.

Popular attractions included the Snake Handler team, who introduced the crowds to their slippery, scaly friends, and the Myuna Farm animal nursery, where the critters were a little more cuddly.

Woodchopping also proved to be a crowd-pleaser, as did the whip-cracking, and the appearance of that funny old fella named Humphrey.

Across the weekend, the stage hosted some wonderful performances including the raw talent of entrants in the Berwick Idol competitions, young upcoming bands and vocalists, members of the Berwick Highland Dancers, Cranbourne Lions Concert Band and City of Casey Pipe Band.

Crowds swarmed the Akoonah Park grounds on Saturday night to revel in the carnival and party atmosphere, which culminated in a spectacular fireworks show.
