Garden tribute for Glenys

10 Dec, 2007 07:07 AM
MORE than 60 family, friends and members of community organisations met last week to unveil the Glenys Varty Memorial Garden at Kalimna Adult Training and Support Services in Narre Warren.

Kalimna clients gathered in the newly planted garden to fondly remember volunteer Glenys Varty who passed away in April.

Mrs Varty had worked with the service soon after it started in 1999 and was a much-loved member of the close-knit team.

Her family helped launch the garden and joined in open day celebrations, which gave everyone a chance to discover what the service offers, and have a tour of its home base in Webb Street.

Kalimna, and its sister service Urimbirra in Noble Park, offers a range of services throughout Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia, as well as referral to community services across the south-east.

Volunteer co-ordinator Faith Tyler said the open day and garden launch was a huge success, helping to boost community involvement in Kalimna's range of services.

She said the bird bath at the centre of the memorial garden was "a tribute to Glenys".

Mrs Varty would always tend to the previous bird bath, ensuring there was enough water for the birds.

"With the open day, we also wanted to say a big thank you to everyone because we are out in the community a fair bit and it was good for people to come and see what we are about."

Ms Tyler said a highlight of the day was a visit from a group of retired greyhounds, following the service's recent involvement in Greyhound Victoria's Great Chase event.
