THERE was a buzz of excitement in the air last Tuesday as foundation students met for an orientation day at the temporary site for the new Casey Central Secondary College.
More than 100 students from nearby primary schools attended the event at the back of Hillsmeade Primary School in Narre Warren South.
Principal Ian McKenzie, former principal of Kambrya College, Berwick, said he was thrilled to be founding principal for a second time in another public-private partnership school.
"I've had the privilege of working with State Government, as well as the private sector," Mr McKenzie said.
He said Casey Central would meet high educational expectations, with a carefully selected 18-member team of staff (for six year 7 classes in 2009).
"We will have no more than 20 students in each class, and with the open classroom setting there can be two classes running at the same time, with up to four teachers between the 40students.
"This guarantees no student will fall through the cracks."
Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley attended the orientation day and spoke with the students.
"It's an absolute joy to be here today.
"Mr McKenzie and parents have worked hard to get us here.
"You are a very special group of students who have a terrific group of educators.
"As foundation students you will have opportunities and privileges."
When referring to Mandarin as the language taught at the school, Ms Graley said: "We are growing little Kevin Rudds here".
The secondary college will be completed by the start of the 2010 academic year, and will be located off Glasscocks Road in Narre Warren South.
