BETTER training amenities, more space and improved safety features are key elements in the blueprint for the new Emerald fire station.
Work has started on the much-awaited fire station in Emerald-Monbulk Road and is expected to be completed by the end of June.
The $982,000 project has been funded under the CFA Capital Works Program, designed, in part, to increase the brigade's operation capacity.
Emerald CFA captain Paul Yandle said the new station would provide a better environment for the brigade's 40 active members and 12 junior members.
It will also double as a division command centre in case of a major fire in the area.
"The new station will give us much more space and better facilities for training. A lot of safety features have been included to ensure the whole station flows much better.
"It will be much safer to enter and exit the new site itself with a greater line of vision for the engine drivers."
Mr Yandle said the station was last upgraded in the late 80s.
"We've literally outgrown the old station - the trucks just kept getting bigger.
"The new station has three large parking bays and provision for a fourth vehicle. The changerooms will be separate from the truck bays, which is an added safety feature, and there's going to be a new pumping pit that is a place for us to practice."
Police and Emergency Services minister Bob Cameron joined Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato on site last week and said the new station would assist Emerald CFA to continue its proud history of servicing the community.
He praised the brigade for playing a key role in a number of major incidents including the Black Saturday bushfires.
"On Black Saturday and in the two weeks after February 7, Emerald CFA volunteers put in a remarkable 1200 hours of service," Mr Cameron said.
"This new fire station will mean that Emerald CFA can be better placed than ever to prepare for, and respond to emergencies in the community."
Ms Lobato said the station has been designed to blend into its present environment and would include natural lighting, energy-efficient fittings and rainwater tanks.
"Emerald is in one of the most beautiful regions of Victoria, but with that beauty comes the ever-present threat of bushfire.
"In light of this, the Emerald CFA does a tremendous job of keeping the local community safe."
