Farmers don't dig Casey's rates decision

30 Jan, 2008 02:04 PM
CASEY Council will keep its uniform rating system - a move that has upset some farmers.

Councils are able to levy either a uniform rate or one or more differential rates.

Under the differential system, farm land, residential, commercial and industrial property, pay different rates in the dollar.

A council-appointed community rate review committee recommended that the council adopt a differential rating system because of the diversity of land uses and zones in the city.

Tooradin farmer Janet Abelthorpe, who was on the committee, said the current system was more suited to a "fully-urbanised municipality".

"Casey is approximately 50 per cent urban and 50 per cent green wedge."

She also said a differential rating system was "fairer and more equitable".

"I would say that the current rate burden is too high for many ratepayers. A differential rating system has the potential to improve things."
