Farm 'needs new roost'

25 May, 2009 09:37 AM
A BROILER farm in Maryknoll will be closed to make way for a residential subdivision if the State Government agrees to amend the Cardinia Shire Planning Scheme.

Councillors voted unanimously last week to have the property on the south-west corner of the township rezoned to make way for 0.8 hectare lots.

Mayor Bill Pearson said the Maryknoll broiler farm was inappropriately located and remained the only undeveloped site in line with the township strategy.

He said a community survey was conducted and the rezoning proposal had drawn overwhelming support from residents and community groups.

"This has been an ongoing issue for years at this shire, but at this moment, it meets all the relevant guidelines for rezoning and we hope the State Government will consider this.

"With the government emphatically saying they need good projects for people to work on, this is ideal as there will be up to 23 homes built."

Cr Pearson said the council was concerned with changes to the Victorian Code for Broiler Farms and disappointed that a submission in response to the review was rejected.

"There is some concern over the Government changes that there could be more chooks in Maryknoll, not less.

"I'm in favour of broiler farms, but just not in the middle of a town," Cr Pearson said.

Cardinia has 36 broiler farms across the shire, second only to the Mornington Peninsula.

The Victoria Code for Broiler Farms, effective since September 2001, is under review and looks to provide guidelines for farm classifications, odour and environmental risk assessments, and development of new farms.
