CRICKET'S version of the television series My Three Sons became a reality when Danny Allen played for Hampton Park's F-grade team with his boys Nathan, 17, Ashleigh, 15, and Brandon, 11.
It could not have been scripted better. Danny drafted his three sons into the team because of a lack of numbers for the game against Fountain Gate.
But instead of being bit players, Danny and Nathan took all 10 wickets, with a little help from Ashleigh and Brandon.
Opening the bowling, Nathan took a career-high 8-27 off 12.2 overs, with his two little brothers taking three catches off his bowling.
He was deprived of a perfect 10-wicket haul by his father, who took the remaining two wickets to shoot out the Gators for just 71.
A proud Danny said it was a day he would remember and lamented taking the two wickets that deprived Nathan of 10 wickets.
"I got my wickets off some pretty terrible balls. Nathan bowled a lot better and deserved to get the two to get his 10 wickets, but that's cricket.
"I was one very proud dad that day. It's something that when you are born and you play sport that you might one day play in the same team as your kids, and to actually perform well and do something in the match is even better. I'm a fortunate bloke."
Danny also praised Brandon's and Ashleigh's catches off Nathan.
"One was a skied ball that most blokes wouldn't want to be under, and Ashleigh took the last catch of the match off Nathan, which was also a ripper.
"I might hang around in the hope that I can play with my three sons again but, if it doesn't happen, I'm still a very happy dad."
Seventeen-year-old Nathan, a promising footballer with the Dandenong Stingrays, didn't blame his father for possibly depriving him of all 10 wickets.
"He took the first two wickets so I might have stopped him from getting 10.
"Bowling with Dad and playing in the same team as my brothers was an amazing experience. Dad was stoked.
"I wasn't going to play cricket this year but on the Saturday Dad called us asking if we could fill in. I rocked up and was given the ball and opened the bowling with Dad. Eight wickets was by far the best I've done - my previous best was four wickets."
In reply, Hampton Park was 1-92 with the Allens yet to bat.
Nathan was listed at No. 7, followed by Danny, Branson and Ashley. No doubt, their side will be looking for a encore performance from Danny and his three sons.
