Errant drivers stun police

02 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
PAKENHAM police are fed up with driver behaviour on roads around Cardinia Shire.

Sergeant Nigel Atkins said he was just gobsmacked at the stupidity of many drivers caught speeding and drink-driving. "I was just amazed at the number of reports and the stupidity of drivers.

"Drink-driving is one of the primary reasons for incidents and road trauma."

Sergeant Atkins said that on the evening of February 20 traffic management crews checked 61 cars and found four drivers over the limit.

"That's a strike rate of one in 15 and all of them were local drivers."

He said police charged a Beaconsfield woman, 35, a Narre Warren South woman, 46, and a Pakenham man, 27, with drink-driving offences and speeding.

Police also charged a Cora Lynn probationary driver, 19, with doing 107kmh in a 50kmh zone in Pakenham.

"Perhaps we need to be asking how can we help to improve the roads for all drivers, because the message doesn't seem to be getting through."
