EMERGENCY markers have been placed in national parks across Victoria after proving their usefulness in Lysterfield Park.
The markers allow emergency services to locate the exact position of a person should they need treatment.
Earlier this year, two men suffered head and facial injuries while mountain bike riding in Lysterfield Park.
Ambulance officers located the two men by using the emergency markers, which are linked to the 000 dispatch centre and provide GPS co-ordinates, road access routes and other navigational information for rescuers.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Services, Danielle Green, visited Lysterfield Park last Thursday to test the marker system.
She said it could be difficult to locate people in areas such as Lysterfield Park in an emergency.
"The installation of emergency markers is important in getting emergency services there as quickly as possible.
"Sites where markers have been installed, including Lysterfield Park, have already proven successful with a number of 000 calls using details from the emergency markers.''
MFB commander Andrew Zammit said the markers would improve response times in isolated areas.
"The crucial seconds we save by having this system in place could mean the difference between life and death for someone.''
