A WEBSITE designed by Emerald Community House to help the state's residents get ready to leave before a bushfire has been highly commended by the CFA.
The community centre's site The Go List was a finalist in two categories of the CFA Fire Awareness Awards.
The online resource provides a list of destinations for people who live in bushfire-prone areas, allowing them to plan to leave early on high-risk days.
It also includes organisations, groups and resources that could help, such as local vets, community houses, churches and support groups.
Project manager Mary Marrow said the idea for The Go List originated in October 2009 and went live with state government support more than a year ago, on November 15, 2010.
She said the site was a work in progress.
"In my view, it's not yet what it has the opportunity to be. It's a framework for us to build on.
"It needs community groups coming forward to support each other - people in Prahran or Malvern saying 'I've got a spare room for storage' or 'I could take care of someone's dog'. These things cost nothing."
The site had more than 13,000 hits in its first year.
"We've built it so it can be used in other disasters," Ms Marrow said. "Some of our biggest hits were in January and February, during the floods.
"There's all kinds of opportunity. There's the potential for it to become one of the biggest community tools in Victoria."
The Go List was a finalist in the community preparedness award and the community volunteer award.
The Fire Awareness Awards are a joint initiative of Victoria's three fire agencies - the MFB, CFA and Department of Sustainability and Environment.
