EASTLINK is nearing its one-year anniversary with a fatality-free record and its operator brands it one of Australia's safest roads.
ConnectEast spokesman James Tonkin said there had been 1.17casualty accidents per100 million vehicle kilometres travelled on EastLink to the end of May 2009, compared with 5.46 on VicRoads' urban freeways.
Out of 127 accidents, only eight resulted in injuries and there had been no deaths.
There were 3500 drivers clocked speeding in the tunnel during testing of speed cameras.
As of June 4, about 122,000 notices have been issued for speeding offences since speed enforcement began on EastLink on September 1.
Mr Tonkin said that with the number of fines issued, there had been concerns raised by the public about the accuracy of the cameras.
"The Department of Justice and Victoria Police reviewed around 55,000 log files and found no discrepancies."
He said testing was also done by an independent authority appointed after an open government tender "in the interests of impartiality".
