PAKENHAM'S long-running Safety House program will fold unless more volunteers are found to run the group's organisation committee.
President Barbara O'Connor and secretary Val Woods have been "doing it alone" for the past seven years and are calling on younger, fresher faces to take on the roles.
The two have collectively worked for Safety House for more than 38 years but are finding things difficult.
"It takes a lot of time and Barb and I just cannot do it on our own," Ms Woods said. "We are tired but we just don't want to see it fold."
"It's just devastating because Pakenham has such a terrific record. It's been going for nearly 25 years, but we've been hanging in there and we just need more people to help out."
Ms Woods said people were in disbelief when she told them the service might have to close and that she and Ms O'Connor would be resigning after the annual general meeting in March next year.
"We don't want to bow out like this, but there doesn't seem to be much of a choice unless people help us out.
"We've always got people volunteering to be a safety house, but we need committee members and monitors."
Ms Woods said the community needed to remember that a safety house was for everybody and a vital part of a growing community like Pakenham. "It would be sad to lose the safety house. It's an essential service for our children - they are our future and need our protection."
