CONCERNS from the community and Victoria Police about dangerous weapons on our streets have been the driving force behind a successful weapons amnesty held statewide this month.
Since April 6, Pakenham police have been handed, or have seized, a cache of knives and other weapons.
Sergeant Graeme Higginbotham said the stash of more than a dozen weapons ranged from flick knives to hunting knives and sheaths.
He said under the state law, it is an offence to carry a knife at any time without a lawful purpose.
"In the case of a flick knife, there is really no excuse for carrying them.
"But for a tradesperson, there may be legitimate reasons for carrying a knife on your person, but it has to be a relevant reason."
Sergeant Higginbotham said residents who wished to surrender weapons should first contact the station.
"Contact us first and then when people attend the station they should announce their purpose to the member on duty before disclosing the weapon.
"Especially people with unregistered firearms, we need them to contact police first and make an arrangement."
Weapons can still be surrendered to police after the amnesty finishes this week.
