MARYKNOLL Wildlife Shelter is one of 60 organisations statewide to receive funds to help rehabilitate sick, injured or orphaned animals.

The volunteer-run centre has been granted $5000, which will be used towards upgrading facilities including new enclosures.

Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato praised the work of the volunteers and wildlife carers in the area.

"These wildlife carers are really unsung community heroes."

Other successful grant recipients include Helen McCoy of Gembrook, $4690 to construct an aviary and macropod enclosures; Wendy Power of Maryknoll, $2694 to build a wombat burrow and purchase an aviary and other equipment; Marilyn Rastall of Pakenham Upper, $2595 for a brood box for ducklings as well as an aviary and heat pads; and Geoffrey Sands of Emerald, $5000 for the purchase of transport cages, aviaries, heat pads and rescue nets.
