Council hearkens to Harkaway calls

25 May, 2009 09:26 AM
CASEY Council officers will report on calls by Harkaway residents for urgent fire safety improvements for the township.

At last Tuesday's council meeting, Cr Simon Curtis said about 30 residents attended a public meeting in Harkaway earlier this month on the issue.

Motions passed unanimously included calls for the immediate upgrading of the fire-access road between the southern end of Baker Road, Harkaway, and the northern end of Old Coach Road, Berwick.

The meeting also supported the installation of a fire-warning siren in Harkaway.

Cr Curtis successfully moved for officers to provide a report to council on the issues raised by the motions.

Harkaway residents have criticised Casey Council's fire management of their area, saying they feared their town could have been destroyed on Black Saturday.
