 Champion not the retiring kind

Champion not the retiring kind

09 Mar, 2010 09:55 AM
THERE is one tonic to ageing positively - combine a cocktail of healthy ingredients for a balanced lifestyle.

Casey's Ageing Champion Pat Whaley says the trick is healthy eating, exercise and community involvement.

"But the key is not to retire from life," she said.

Casey Council want to hear from residents of all ages on what ageing means.

Mrs Whaley leads by example.

For the past eight years, the Narre Warren resident and former nurse, 71, has been actively involved with Casey's younger and older residents.

She co-ordinates a team of 56 seniors to work in four aged-care facilities around Casey.

"It is a big team. The volunteers do a great job from running activities in the facilities, to feeding residents, being part of the palliative care support service and they help support relatives.

"It's such a positive thing for seniors to work in the community. When you get involved it can be part of a healing process. Some people lose their spouse, so it will certainly help that person from being lonely or bored.

"It's a rewarding job but I've also learnt a whole set of new skills after the retirement from nursing.

"So has my husband. He was a mechanic; now he's got nursing experience and teaches woodwork to Cubs and Scouts.

"Everybody has gifts. It's about thinking laterally and coming up with ways to keep using those gifts after retirement.

"The most important thing is not to just become a number. Get out into your community and get involved."

City of Casey manager of community strengthening Janette Green said that although isolation was consistently reported as being one of the biggest challenges to ageing positively, the council wanted to hear from Casey residents of all ages to get a snapshot of what ageing in Casey means.

"We are reviewing the Ageing Positively in Casey Plan developed in 2005. We need feedback from Casey residents of all ages as this is an issue that affects us all," she said.
