OLYMPIC gold medallist Cathy Freeman ran into Berwick Fields Primary School last week to congratulate pupils for taking part in a worldwide fitness program.
The 265 pupils from grades 3 to 6 and 11 teachers collectively walked 193,741,200 steps in the Global Children's Challenge and were presented with a certificate of achievement by Ms Freeman.
In the challenge, pupils were given pedometers and encouraged to take 15,000 steps each day - with many clocking more than 25,000 - over an eight-week period.
Ms Freeman said the challenge made getting active fun, educational and a healthy habit for life.
"The health of future generations is at risk. We need to do our bit to help," she said.
Berwick Fields grade 3 and 4 teacher Libby Derbyshire said the experience was a very positive one for her pupils.
"The kids loved the challenge element and the fact they were part of a global program and sharing the experience with hundreds of thousands of children worldwide.
"Through increasing their physical fitness, they also began to feel better, brighter and more alert overall.
"In class, I'd never seen them so attentive."
More than 120,000 students from 27 countries took part in the Global Children's Challenge this year.
