Cardinia caught short

02 Nov, 2009 09:13 AM
DISABILITY-support providers say people living with a disability are being further disadvantaged by a shortage of hoists in public toilets across Cardinia Shire.

Outlook One manager Anne McCormack is leading a push for hoists to be installed to provide greater support for people living with a disability, their families and carers.

She is also hoping to see changes at a State Government level to improve access to public toilets for people of all abilities.

"In the next 10 years, I would hope to see a change to the acceptable standards of building regulations.

"It is very simple to accommodate these hoists - only needing to add about two metres in space - but it needs to be done in the planning."

Ms McCormack has met with Cardinia Shire Council to discuss the possible inclusion of a hoist at the new library and town hall development, or the proposed Woolworths shopping complex.

"If we can get the council or the developers to build these facilities, they would help a wide range of people in the community."

Ms McCormack said the only two hoists in Cardinia Shire and neighbouring Casey were at the Cardinia LiFE Centre and the Casey Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

"If clients who require an incontinent aid are enjoying an outing in the community, then their time is limited -maybe three hours at most," Ms McCormack said.

"Why should people have to return home or pay to use facilities at private venues. There should be some sort of public facility."

A spokesperson for Cardinia Shire council did not respond before deadline.

On November 15, Outlook One is holding a lunch at Viale Restaurant in Pakenham to raise money for a hoist at its centre and a respite holiday for clients. The event includes an auction and raffle. Tickets are $70 and donations of auction/raffle items are most welcome.
