DOGS of all shapes and sizes will be doing their best to impress the judges in Pakenham this weekend at the Championship Dog Show.
The competitive nature of breeders and canine lovers will be on display during the all-breed show which forms part of the line-up for the Pakenham Agricultural and Horticultural Show.
This year's secretary of the dog show Joan Harrison said the event gave patrons the opportunity to see dogs and puppies of all breeds at their best.
"We've got a very good entry of about 650 dogs this year – about 70 more than last year and there are about 150 different breeds.
"It's a great opportunity for the dogs to get out and strut their stuff and they really love it."
Joan, from Bunyip, has been involved in shows for about 30 years with her toy-breed Lowchens.
She says preparing the dogs for show can take a lot of work, but like many other people who show dogs, it's a passion.
"These shows aren't just cosmetic though. They are about showing the dogs in their top form – as close as possible to standard for the particular breed, as set down by the Australian National Kennel Club. Dogs voted best in their group can win cash prizes and points towards an Australian Champion Title."
Joan says the show also provided an insight for people looking to buy a puppy as they can see all breeds on display, talk to breeders and find out which type of dog would best suit their lifestyle. The Championship Dog Show is on from 10am this Saturday at the Pakenham racecourse.
