At the core of it

LINEKE Jenkins knows a thing or two about family tradition.

The 31 year old wakes up every Sunday at about 5am to run her business, something her family has done since the 1960s.

Lineke, an apple seller at Berwick's Akoonah Park Market, is the third generation in her family to work in the fruit-selling industry.

After migrating from Holland in the early 1950s, Lineke's grandparents bought a property in Officer where they began growing fruit and vegetables and selling the produce door to door and at markets across Melbourne.

Lineke's father Martien took over the business once his parents retired.

After working with her father for many years, Lineke decided it was time for her to "leave the nest" and go out on her own.

"I wanted to start my own business. I was brought up on [apples], surrounded by them, so it was just a natural progression [to go into business selling apples].

"The orchard is just up the road and I like knowing that I'm selling local produce."

Lineke said it "wasn't easy" starting out, but had support from her father when needed.

"It wasn't easy being a young woman and starting a business.

Seven years on and Mrs Jenkins is well-known by market-goers as the "apple lady".

She said it was her customers that have kept her going for almost a decade.

"They are friendly and loyal.

"Even though I don't know most of their names, I spend nearly all day chatting to them.

"It's all part of the market atmosphere."

Lineke said growing up in markets has helped her to become the person she was today.

"[That] was a big advantage. I learned confidence with people and money. Now, I'm my own boss and every decision is mine.

"I'm very proud of myself. As a wife and mother, having my business keeps me socially and mentally in check."

Her husband Darryn often brings their two-year-old daughter, Mily, to the market to help join in the family business, She's Apples.

"Mily is fast becoming the fourth generation apple-sales lady. She sits up on the stall and yells out, 'Apples! Apples!'.

"As she gets older, I hope she follows her own passion for something."
