Asperger's tale from the heart

06 Dec, 2011 01:00 AM
TRACEY Gottliebsen couldn't find a novel with a positive message about children with Asperger's syndrome, so she wrote her own.

The Narre Warren South resident, who has been a chartered accountant for 20 years, wrote and published Tremendaspie after one of her sons was diagnosed with the Asperger's, which often results in people having difficulties with social interaction and developing restrictive and repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests.

She worked on the novel for about six years, and released it two weeks ago.

Tremendaspie tells the story of Jack, a 10-year-old with Asperger's syndrome,

Jack does not always see the world in the usual way and is constantly surprised by the amount of trouble he finds himself in. He makes a promise to himself to finally be accepted and become the most normal and popular kid in school, but starts to question how normal his peers really are.

The story is told through Jack's eyes. Ms Gottliebsen said the form of narrative was highly unusual in novels about people with the condition.

"The focus is on other people, not them.

"I want people to read it and think 'my kid does that too'.

"I didn't want it to be unrealistic, like American novels where they go off on adventures."

Ms Gottliebsen, who has five children in her family, said Tremendaspie was not entirely based on her son's life.

"I'd say it's half and half; it's bits and pieces."

She said there had been a surprising amount of interest in the novel, with orders coming in from across Australia and overseas.

"The first person to read it was a grandparent, and their eight-year-old grandson had just been diagnosed with Asperger's. So it's done its job; hopefully they'll get it."

She is also releasing a reading guide to the novel later this month, to help adults understand Jack's behaviour in the story.
