A hole in one for homeless

18 Feb, 2008 12:46 PM
HELPING a worthy charity can be as easy as enjoying 18 holes of golf.

The Lighthouse Foundation will be the chief beneficiary of next month's Greater Dandenong Rotary Charity Golf Day at Keysborough Golf Club.

The foundation provides refuge and long-term support for homeless people aged 15-22.

Entries are open for golfers in teams of four or individual categories. There will also be bonus prizes for the longest drives and the first hole-in-one for the day.

Laurie Worsnop, Greater Dandenong Rotary's incoming president, says the golf day has raised more than $500,000 for community causes in its 26-year history.

He thanked the Journal for stepping in as the event's major sponsor after the City of Greater Dandenong withdrew its support last year.

Organisers hope to raise enough money for Lighthouse to cover running costs of a house for several months.

Lighthouse community manager Andy Scobie says it hopes to entice celebrity patrons, including AFL players, to join the field.

The foundation will field a team of staff and possibly young residents.

The Journal, as the golf day and a Lighthouse sponsor, nominated the foundation as the event's preferred sponsor.

Divisional editor Peter Simcock says the Journal is proud to support such a popular and important event.

"Lighthouse is based on empowering young people to take control of their lives.

"The charity golf day will give much-needed help to the foundation's inspirational work."

The golf day is at 12.30pm on March 3, at Hutton Road, Keysborough. Entries close March1. Details: Tony Phillips, 0411225938, Colin Speirs, 0418172390 or at www.rotaryendeavourhills.org
